This book traces the origin and development of Chinese pottery and porcelain; describes the achievements and artistic features of the celebrated kilns of various periods from the making of pottery and porcelain to the shaping, glaze colours and decoration of the pottery and porcelain vessels; and brings thereader up to date on the latest discoveries in China's ceramic archaeology.
李知宴，1937年出生，中国国家博物馆研究员，中国古陶瓷学会副会长，享受国家特殊津贴。1962年毕业于北京大学历史系考古专业，进入北京故宫博物院研究陶瓷，主要整理研究皇宫珍藏的官窑瓷器，进行古代窑址的田野考古，曾率队发掘龙泉窑。1979年进入北京历史博物馆考古部继续研究陶瓷，系统地开展对中国古瓷窑址的考察和发掘，再次发掘龙泉窑。近50年来一直从事陶瓷考古，陶瓷器艺术鉴赏，陶瓷真伪鉴定工作。在中国、日本、美国、中国香港、中国台湾等国家和地区的报刊、学术刊物上发表有关陶瓷文章200余篇，已出版专著或合著20余本。其主要专著有：《中国陶瓷简史》、《中国陶瓷》、《中国釉陶艺术》、《唐三彩》、《中国陶瓷文化史》、《史前一五代的中国陶瓷》、《中国古代陶瓷工艺》等。
